The Bible History or Myth?
Many people are familiar with the famous characters of the Bible Moses, Abraham, Jesus, Paul and others. Often, though, people do not stop to consider whether these characters were real, living individuals; many in today’s society look on them as just characters in a fairy story. Certainly, a lot of modern learning and opinion regards them as just that, or little better. But is this necessarily the case? Are the people of the Bible just fictitious, imaginary characters, or were they real people, living in real places and undergoing real events? Is the Bible history, or is it myth? The aim of Scripture in History is to show, by means of historical and archaeological evidence, that the historical accounts of the Bible are in fact reliable and accurate documents which give us a true and dependable account of the people and places with which they deal. We do this by means of the material found on this website, as well as by speaking appointments and by distribution of teaching materials. By building up the faith of people in the reliability of the Bible’s accounts, our aim is to build and strengthen the faith of Christians as well as to encourage those who are not Christians to investigate further the claims and statements of the Bible, especially with regard to their own salvation. As you look through these materials it is our hope that you will see that the Bible is indeed a reliable book, and one to which we can turn in confidence and hope. We do not deny that there are difficult passages in the Bible, and that there are many historical problems which exist when archaeology and the Bible’s accounts are compared. We try to answer those problems where possible, and to show that the sweeping statements that we so often see in the media concerning the Bible’s alleged inaccuracy are, at the very least, open to considerable doubt. So often we see claims that, to take a few examples, “the Bible is not accurate”, “the accounts of Jesus’ life were fictionalised and made up long after the event”, “the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt didn’t happen”, and many other claims of a similar nature, all designed to rubbish the idea that the Bible is a reliable record. Frequently, these ideas are presented as established, unquestioned facts. In reality, however, they are just theories, and often they are ignorant and unfounded theories too. We want to show you that there is in fact solid and dependable evidence to show that these theories should be rejected, and that we should once again take a good long look at the Bible. We hope that you enjoy this website, and we invite you to take advantage of the learning materials advertised here as well as the speaking program. Please contact us if you have any questions on this subject at all! |
